Lecture: Europe after the Zeitenwende

  • 5. 12. 2022 - 17:00
  • Hall of Patriots, Karolinum, Ovocný trh 5, Prague 1

We would like to invite you to a special lecture “Europe after Zeitenwende” given by Prof. dr. Luuk van Middelaar. The event, coordinated by the Netherlands Embassy in Prague in cooperation with Charles University and the Vaclav Havel Library, will take place at the Hall of Patriots at the Karolinum, Charles University on Monday, 5 December, 5-6:30pm. The lecture will take place under the auspices of the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, H.E. Daan Huisinga.

Europe after the Zeitenwende is the second lecture in series of an annual Cleveringa Lecture which is traditionally held in the Netherlands and in many other countries, including the Czech Republic. Each year, such meetings´ themes relate to the rule of law, freedom and responsibility in commemoration of Rudolph Cleveringa, Professor of Law at Leiden University, who spoke out against the dismissal of his Jewish colleagues. Recognising the similarities between Professor Cleveringa’s principled stance against the Nazi occupiers and Vaclav Havel’s refusal to live under the lie of communism, the Netherlands Embassy in Prague together with the Václav Havel Library started a new series of Cleveringa lectures since 2021.

Prof. dr. Luuk van Middelaar is based at Leiden University. Prof. dr. Luuk van Middelaar as a Professor of Foundations and Practice of the European Union and its Institutions is one of the leading thinkers about European affairs. After his lecture, van Middelaar will engage in a dialogue with Michael Žantovský, Director of the Václav Havel Library, and take questions from the audience. The event will be hosted by Prof. dr. Milena Králíčková, Rector of Charles University.
