Join us on Friday 10 February at 3:30pm for the EU seminar on Migration policy of the European Union: what lies ahead? with Ms. Tineke Strik, who is a Member of the European Parliament for GroenLinks, of the Greens/EFA political group. The seminar is organized in cooperation with the European Parliament Office in the Netherlands.
In 2022, more than 5 million persons sought protection and refuge in the EU. The vast majority of them came from Ukraine, but the numbers of applicants from Syria, Turkey, and Afghanistan also increased, and arrivals from across the Mediterranean reached the highest levels since 2015. Meanwhile, the proposal to reform the EU migration policy – the New Pact for Migration – remains blocked, and numerous asylum seekers continue to face degrading and sometimes life-threatening conditions at various European borders. In this talk, MEP Tineke Strik from the GroenLinks party, member of the Greens/EFA political grouping in the European Parliament, offers a comprehensive overview of the EU migration policy as it stands today, the ongoing efforts to reform it, and the work the European Parliament has been doing to support migration, asylum, and human rights and control the work of Frontex, the European Border and Coast Gard Agency.
MEP Strik is a Dutch politician for the GroenLinks party and a professor of Citizenship and Migration Law at Radboud University in Nijmegen. She has served as a member of the European Parliament since 2019. Before that, between 2007 and 2019 she was a member of the Dutch Senate. She is a member of the EP Committee on External Affairs as well as the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs and has acted as rapporteur on issues of human rights, EU external migration policy, and the implementation of the Return Directive.
