Barcelona Research Seminar 2021

Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona

2021 edition of the Barcelona Research Seminar goes online!

The Barcelona Research Seminar will take place on January 18-19, 2021.
The seminar is reserved only for EPS students and staff.

Current circumstances impose a new structure for the development of this event, which cannot be guaranteed face-to-face in Pompeu Fabra University. The development of the pandemic situation thus compels us to switch the event on a fully remote, online modality. We will soon provide a single, comprehensive Zoom Link for the event. Please remember that attendance to the BRS is compulsory even in this extraordinary modality.s.

General Structure of the Event

In the first slot of activities (Opening Lecture, both days), all students will be requested to join a common online session where they will be attending special lectures from leading academics. For this part, all students will be connected to the main virtual space of Zoom.

In the group sessions where students will present their research projects, they will be divided into 8 groups, whose distribution criteria will depend on the topic of the MA dissertations. All students will have the opportunity to present their research project. See the group distribution in the e-mail box.

Students will be requested to switch back and forth between the common online space (for the opening lectures and social activities, Zoom Virtual Aula Magna) and the separate group spaces (for the academic presentations, these are the Zoom Breakout Rooms) during the two days. The link for the event is provided in the Programme Handout. Please refer to this document for further reference.

Deadlines & Instructions for each Activity

Activity: Opening Lectures I-II
ALL students are requested to connect online to the same virtual space in time for the beginning of the day. They will receive a lecture from a leading academic showing them their research and inspiring them through innovative/well-established research questions and methodologies. The lectures also include open debates for asking clarification both on content and methodologies.

Thus, each student will receive up to 20 minutes (feedback). In total, each student will be assigned a 30-minute slot (video + feedback & questions); 2nd-year students will be responsive to make comments to at least one first-year presentation.

The Research Project’s Short Summary Video must be submitted the link, EPS students have in their e-mail, by Friday, 8th of January 2021. This will provide sufficient time to the panel for watching the videos beforehand and preparing accurate feedback.

Students will log in to each of the assigned virtual group spaces. They will be distributed in the same 8 groups inside separate virtual classrooms. However, presentations will be divided equally between Day 1 and Day 2**. During this activity, 2nd-year students who are not presenting must still attend their own group presentations; 1st-year students will be responsive to make comments to at least one second-year presentation.
For 2nd year students, the activity will include a traditional PPT presentation lasting 10 minutes. Students will be requested to present their research, and this will be followed by an additional 15-20 minutes for Professors’ feedback and a question time from fellow participants in the group. In total, each student will be assigned a 30-minute slot (PPT presentation + feedback & questions).
