2021 edition of the Barcelona Research Seminar goes online!
The Barcelona Research Seminar will take place on January 18-19, 2021.
Current circumstances impose a new structure for the development of this event. Now, we are planning a fully on-line event with a possibility to make a hybrid model if the situation allows that at EPS partner universities. We hope to provide a final answer to this as soon as receiving further instructions from universities and state authorities.
General Structure of the Event
In the first slot of activities (Opening Lecture, both days), all students will be requested to join a common online session where they will be attending special lectures from leading academics. For this part, all 90 students will be connected, although we hope to provide common facilities and conference equipment for the small groups.
In the group sessions, where students will present their research project, students will be divided into 8 groups, whose distribution criteria will depend on the topic and the methodologies of the MA dissertations. All students will have the opportunity to present their research project.
Students will be requested (whether an entire group in a university or remotely from home) to switch back and forth between the common online space (for the opening lectures and social activities) and the separate group spaces (for the academic presentations) during the two days. All links will be provided in due time. Please refer to the Handout Programme for reference.
Deadlines & Instructions for each Activity
Activity: Opening Lecture I-II
ALL students are requested to connect online to the same virtual space in time for the beginning of the day. They will receive a lecture from a leading academic showing them their research and inspiring them through innovative/well-established research questions and methodologies. The lectures also include open debates for asking clarification both on content and methodologies.
- Activity: Research Feedback for First Year Students – Master Thesis Project
Students will log into each of the assigned virtual group spaces. 1st year students are distributed in 8 groups of 5 presenting students. During this activity, 2nd year students can attend any group of their choice.
This year, 1st year students are being requested to present one short summary video (max. 10 minutes) of their research project. Discussants will view the video in advance and each student will receive individual feedback (from professors) about his/her research proposal as well as from other students. Thus, each student will receive up to 20 minutes (feedback). In total, each student will be assigned a 30-minute slot (video + feedback & questions); 2nd year students will be responsive to make comments to at least one first year presentation.
The Research Project’s Short Summary Video must be delivered to the Professors responsible for the group by Friday, 8th of January 2021. This will provide sufficient time to the panel for watching the videos beforehand and preparing accurate feedback.
- Activity: Presentations of Second Year Students, Part I & II – Master Thesis Project
Students will log into each of the assigned virtual group spaces. They will be distributed in the same 8 groups inside separate virtual classrooms. However, presentations will be divided equally between Day 1 and Day 2**. During this activity, 2nd year students who are not presenting must still attend their own group presentations; 1st year students will be responsive to make comments to at least one second year presentation.
** Groups 1 to 6 will be composed of 6 presenting people, and 3 will present on the first day;
** Groups 7 and 8 will be composed of 7 presenting people. In this case, four people will present on the first day and the activity is extended to 16:00PM
For 2nd year students, the activity will include a traditional PPT presentation lasting 10 minutes. Students will be requested to present their research, and this will be followed by an additional 15-20 minutes for Professors’ feedback and a question time from fellow participants in the group. In total, each student will be assigned a 30-minute slot (PPT presentation + feedback & questions).
The PPT presentations must also be delivered to the Professors responsible for the group by Friday, 8th of January 2021. This will provide sufficient time to the panel for checking the content and preparing accurate feedback.
- Social Event and/or Cultural Conference
We are working on the possibility of making some sort of social event. If we can finally do it, all students will be requested to connect online to the same virtual space in time for the beginning of the activity.
